Claire Tozer

My parents were both interested in the arts, particularly my mother who was a printmaker. In 1968 we travelled through Britain, Europe, Canada, and America, visiting art galleries. I was 8 years old then, and that experience was the foundation for my life in art.

My last two years at high school I studied weaving, ceramics, screen printing, jewellery making, and I majored in Graphic Design.  After completing a Diploma in Graphic Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, I moved back to Sydney where I worked as a Graphic Artist in advertising (all before computers)

One project I was given when I was working Freelance, was to design the Australian 1988 Bicentenary Card for UNICEF.

However, I wasn’t satisfied in advertising, so I pursued evening contemporary Life Drawing and Still Life classes at the Willoughby Workshop Arts Centre where I met my husband (who was my art teacher) My drawings became predominantly pastel drawings and I started to enter competitions and participate in group exhibitions.

After moving to the Central Coast in 2001 and eventually travelling through the outback of Australia, my artwork changed direction. My love of the dry outback plains and the coastal grasses and shrubs have influenced my style. My focus is on a build-up of lines to create an atmosphere of the environment.

Drawing for me is vital, it is expression, observation, understanding, thinking, creativity. It is an instinct.
